A defensible space is the area between a structure and an oncoming wildfire where nearby vegetation has been modified to reduce a wildfire’s intensity. Ips beetles are bark beetles that damage pine and spruce trees. An indication of the Ips beetle infestation could be a yellowish- or reddish-brown boring dust in bark crevices or around the base of the tree.
